Healthy Bites with TGMC | Tomato: Is it a Fruit or Vegetable?

THE BLT OR BLAT SANDWICH

The question of whether a tomato is a fruit, or a vegetable went all the way to the United States Supreme Court in 1893. The Court ruled that, for import tax purposes, tomatoes are a vegetable. However, according to scientists, tomatoes are truly a fruit. Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K and are found in many foods we eat daily.

While most tomatoes are red when mature, they can also come in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, green, and purple. The tomato can be eaten raw like a fruit, as an ingredient in many dishes including salads, salsas, sauces, and soups, or processed into ketchup. For the greatest flavor and nutrition, keep at room temperature and use within one week.
